Velotric Fold 1 Plus Review -- The SensorSwap Feature Is a Game-Changer

Two Sensors, One Bike

The Velotric Fold 1 Plus does something no other folding e-bike in its price range does: it lets you switch between torque sensing and cadence sensing with a button press. Velotric calls it SensorSwap, and it's not a gimmick. It fundamentally changes how you use the bike depending on the situation.

Torque Mode vs Cadence Mode

Torque mode measures your pedaling force and amplifies it proportionally. Push harder, get more assist. This is the "workout" mode -- you control exactly how much effort you put in, and the motor matches you. It's more natural, more efficient on battery, and better for hills where you want precise power delivery.

Cadence mode detects that you're pedaling and provides a constant level of assist regardless of effort. This is the "cruise" mode -- pedal lightly and the motor does the heavy lifting. It drains the battery faster but requires almost zero effort from you.

In practice, we used torque mode for commuting (better exercise, better range) and cadence mode for running errands when we just wanted to get somewhere without thinking about it. Being able to switch between them mid-ride is genuinely useful, not just a spec sheet bullet point.

Motor and Power

The 750W motor puts out 75Nm of torque. That's more than enough for urban riding and handles moderate hills without bogging down. In torque mode, the power delivery is smooth and responsive. In cadence mode, it's more aggressive -- the bike wants to go and it goes.

The 450-pound total load capacity is the highest we've seen on a folding e-bike at this price. If you're a larger rider or you haul heavy loads, this matters.

Build and Ride Quality

The frame feels solid. There's minimal flex through the hinge under hard pedaling, which is the first test any folding bike has to pass. The 20x4" fat tires provide decent cushioning on rough roads, though there's no suspension fork. The hydraulic disc brakes are reliable and require minimal lever effort.

Ride position is upright and comfortable. The handlebar reach is short enough for most riders without feeling cramped for taller ones. Folded dimensions are compact enough for a car trunk.

Range

Velotric quotes 55 miles. In torque mode with mixed terrain and PAS 2-3, we got about 45 miles from a 180-pound rider. In cadence mode at higher assist levels, that dropped to 30-35 miles. The battery charges fully in about 5 hours.

At $1,499

The Fold 1 Plus costs $500 more than the Lectric XP 4.0 and $400 less than the RadExpand 5 Plus. The SensorSwap feature alone justifies the premium over the Lectric if you want that flexibility. The higher weight capacity makes it the better choice for riders over 250 pounds.
