The Fold That Justifies Everything
The Brompton Electric C Line folds to 25.3 x 23 x 10.6 inches. Read that again. This is a full-featured electric bike that folds smaller than most carry-on luggage. You can tuck it under a desk, carry it onto any train or bus, or stash it in a coat closet. No other folding e-bike comes close to this level of compactness.
Every Brompton is handmade at their factory in London. They've been perfecting this fold mechanism since 1975. The Di Blasi fold -- where the rear wheel tucks under the bike both horizontally and vertically -- is engineering art. It happens in about 20 seconds and produces a package you can genuinely carry with one hand.
The Electric System
A custom 250W front-hub motor paired with a 300Wh battery provides pedal assist up to 15.5 mph (UK-spec Class 1). The battery lives in a removable carry bag that mounts to the front of the bike. Pull it off when you fold, and the bike drops to just 32 pounds. With battery, 38 pounds.
Range is 20-45 miles depending on assist level and terrain. The torque sensor delivers smooth, natural-feeling assist that makes the bike feel like a very fit version of yourself rather than a machine doing the work. Charging takes about 4 hours from flat.
The Ride
Sixteen-inch wheels on a Brompton will never feel like a full-size bike. Steering is quick, and bumps hit harder than on a 20-inch wheeler. But Brompton has tuned the geometry and tire pressure to minimize the small-wheel compromises. After the first mile, you stop noticing. After the first week, you appreciate the agility in traffic.
The C Line comes in two builds: 4-speed and 12-speed. The 12-speed Explore version handles hills that would defeat most folding bikes. Brompton's internal hub gearing is reliable and shift quality is clean.
Is It Worth $4,250?
If you commute by train and bike, absolutely. No qualifier needed. The Brompton's fold is so compact that it turns multi-modal commuting from a hassle into a non-issue. Carry it on the train, unfold at the station, ride to the office, fold it under your desk. No lock needed, no theft worry, no bike racks.
If you drive to a trailhead and ride from there, no. Buy a Lectric XP 4.0 for a quarter of the price.
Brompton's 7-year frame warranty and commitment to parts availability add long-term value. This isn't a bike you replace in 3 years. Many Bromptons are still riding after 15-20 years.
The Brompton Electric C Line is the best folding bike ever made, attached to a competent electric system. You're paying for the fold. If you need that fold, nothing else will do.
